Updating C-Gate IoT Hub

C-Gate updates are released quite frequently with new features, bugfixed and security updates. Check our Changelog to see whats new.

Prepare the update

Before performing an update:

  • Make a backup of the C-Gate data. This will enable you later to downgrade to this version if needed.
  • Write down the current version of C-Gate IoT Hub as displayed on the web interface to rollback to this specific version later if needed.
  • Check the Changelog before updating for specific update hints or instructions.

Tip

On a virtual server environment with only C-Gate the easiest way to make a backup is to create a VM snapshot.

Backup the C-Gate volume

cd /opt/cloos/cgate/
sudo docker stop cgate
sudo docker run --rm --volumes-from cgate -v $(pwd):/backup ubuntu tar cvzf /backup/cgate-backup.tar.gz /data
Set-Location "$env:LOCALAPPDATA\programs\cgate"
docker stop cgate
docker run --rm --volumes-from cgate -v "${PWD}:/backup" ubuntu tar cvzf /backup/cgate-backup.tar.gz /data

Updating the container

Warning

Make sure to backup your C-Gate data before updating.

cd /opt/cloos/cgate/
sudo docker compose pull
sudo docker compose up -d

Tip

On older docker installations without the integrated compose plugin it might be needed to run docker-compose instead of docker compose.

Set-Location "$env:LOCALAPPDATA\programs\cgate"
docker compose pull
docker compose up -d

Installer version (Until mid 2026)

A C-Gate Update script shortcut is available in the windows Start menu that will automatically download and install the latest version.

Offline update

Warning

Make sure to backup your C-Gate data before updating.

  1. Download The latest C-Gate image and copy it to the offline system.

  2. Perform the update

Place the image file in /opt/cloos/cgate and run the following commands:

    cd /opt/cloos/cgate/
    sudo docker load -i c-gate-iot-hub.image
    sudo docker compose up -d

    Tip

On older docker installations without the integrated compose plugin it might be needed to run docker-compose instead of docker compose.

Place the image file in %LOCALAPPDATA%\programs\cgate and run the following commands:

    Set-Location "$env:LOCALAPPDATA\programs\cgate"
    docker load -i c-gate-iot-hub.image
    docker compose up -d

Rollback / Downgrade

Danger

Do not start an older C-Gate version without restoring a backup first. C-Gate is performing database migrations after installing an update that are not rolled back when downgrading the container image.

  1. Stop the running C-Gate application

    sudo docker stop cgate

    docker stop cgate

  2. Recover the data from the previous version

    cd /opt/cloos/cgate
    sudo docker run --rm --volumes-from cgate -v $(pwd):/backup ubuntu bash -c "cd /data && tar xvzf /backup/cgate-backup.tar.gz --strip 1"

    Set-Location "$env:LOCALAPPDATA\programs\cgate"
    docker run --rm --volumes-from cgate -v "${PWD}:/backup" ubuntu bash -c "cd /data && tar xvzf /backup/cgate-backup.tar.gz --strip 1"

  3. Change your C-Gate version

Edit your docker-compose.yml and replace the cgate:latest tag with the version that matches your C-Gate version of your data backup. For example cgate:2026.9.0

    Note

If your machine has no internet access you also need to download copy the image to the machine and load it using docker load -i c-gate-iot-hub-2026.9.0.image

  4. Start the the previous version

    cd /opt/cloos/cgate
    sudo docker compose up -d

    Set-Location "$env:LOCALAPPDATA\programs\cgate"
    docker compose up -d
